What follows is what is worth knowing about the city. The specific recommendations — where to eat, when to avoid the crowds, which catamaran to take — Daniel gives in person, because they change from one season to the next.
Bačvice is the city beach, a few minutes on foot — sand, shallow water and cafés along it. Ovčice is further and quieter, on the rocks to the east. Kašjuni and Bene sit on Marjan among the pines, and need a bus or a longer walk.

Diocletian’s Palace is not a museum but part of the city — you walk through it on the way to the square. The Riva is the seafront promenade linking the port to the old town. Marjan is the wooded hill above the city, with a great many steps and a view down the channel.

Ferries and catamarans to Brač, Hvar and Šolta leave from the ferry port, 7–8 minutes on foot. Šolta is the closest and the quietest. Brač is a large island with several towns and beaches, Zlatni rat at Bol among them, which is a further journey on from the ferry port. Hvar needs an early departure if you want it as a day trip.
Trogir is half an hour by bus, and its whole old town is UNESCO-listed. Krka National Park is about an hour’s drive. Omiš sits at the mouth of the Cetina canyon, for rafting and climbing. Klis and Solin are closer, if you are travelling without a car.
July and August are the busiest months. Set off early for a quieter beach, and allow time to find parking. June and September are usually quieter, and the sea is still good for swimming. It is worth carrying some cash for smaller places and the market.
For much of Split you will not need a car. For trips outside the city, plan on a bus, a boat, a transfer or a car. The walk from the apartment down to the water and into town is described on the location page.
